I've often argued that one of the most important reasons why Americans in particular should study abroad is to be exposed to new ideas. In our modern echo-chamber political climate, we so rarely get the needed infusions of new ideas that are essential to the health of a society. By studying, and therefore living, abroad, students get the important opportunity to hear viewpoints that differ from the ones that they've grown up with. This can force you to reassess your perspective, and potentially adopt a new one. It's one of the most important reasons to encourage more students to complete their bachelor and masters degrees abroad, and to encourage more Germans and other international students to study in America.
